Great review. Every Tisha B'Av I read "the Cantonists", by Larry Domnitch. I feel this must be THEE blackest period of Jewish history. Kidnapping of children, especially orphans and children of widows and the poor...almost unbelievable to read the accounts of this period. If one wishes to know real sadness, this is the book.
